Juruena River · Salto Augusto Falls
Pousada Juruena sits on the Juruena River in the conserved forests of Cotriguaçu, far northern Mato Grosso. The land-based lodge offers complete packages: air-conditioned rooms with private bathrooms, three daily meals in a spacious hardwood dining hall, and unlimited beer, soft drinks and water. Low fishing pressure on this stretch of the Juruena produces the kind of species density and trophy size that has largely disappeared from more accessible Amazon destinations.
The fire peacock bass (Cichla mirianae) is the marquee catch on the Juruena, a species native to the Upper Tapajós basin that develops vivid red-orange coloration at maturity and delivers explosive surface strikes along eddies, margins and oxbow lagoons. In the rocky rapids and ledges, an ecologically adapted dark-colored morph known locally as tucunaré-preto demands a different approach: deep jigs and mid-water retrieves worked against the current. Wolf fish (trairão), payara (cachorra), bicuda, jau catfish, goliath catfish (piraíba) and surubim round out a predator lineup rarely matched in Brazilian freshwater fishing. Each pair of anglers gets a dedicated aluminum boat with an experienced local river captain.
The lodge runs regular excursions to Salto Augusto, one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the Amazon, in partnership with the indigenous communities of the region. Guests can choose a same-day round-trip visit or an overnight stay at the falls in a rustic riverside camp, both organized with full logistics, safety support, and indigenous cultural accompaniment.
Facilities are built in regional hardwood: a carved-door main lounge, a large flat-screen TV room with projection screen, and a spacious air-conditioned restaurant. Beer, soft drinks and water are unlimited; natural bait and all fishing fuel are included. Road transfer from Alta Floresta (280 km, five hours) plus the 50-minute boat leg (or a direct air taxi in 70 minutes) are the guest's cost, with complete logistics guidance from the lodge team.
